5 Reasons You Might Be Afraid of Bra Fitting (But Shouldn’t Be)

If you’ve ever worn an ill-fitting bra (most, if not all of us, have), then you’ll know that there is a dramatic difference when you’re finally in a well-fitting bra. It’s important to know that bras are not supposed to be uncomfortable, they aren’t supposed to constrict you, and you aren’t even really supposed to feel them. Does that surprise you? Chances are because you’re either wearing an ill-fitting bra or you’re not wearing the best style for your unique breasts. Women may forgo a fitting and continue to wear a bra that doesn’t fit, which isn’t ideal and can lead to issues in the future, for a variety of reasons. On #ShopNTL, we want to dispel those reasons and encourage you to get regular fittings (or fit yourself when you are comfortable to) so you can be in the best bras of your life!

1. You’re insecure about your body

We know this is a big reason women don’t want to get fittings, and we get it. But we also know that professional bra fitting experts not only barely look at your body (they only care about measuring you accurately!) but they also don’t really care what you look like. So if you forgot to shave your armpits or have a little spot you don’t like, trust us, it won’t be noticed. Bra fitting experts are trained to be compassionate and gentle knowing that all women have hangups about their bodies.

2. You’ve had a bad fitting in the past

We truly hope this hasn’t happened to you, but we know that it’s possible you could have had a bad experience with a bra fitting expert in the past that makes you write off anyone else in the industry. Perhaps they made you feel insecure, or they didn’t know what they were talking about. Just know that the majority of bra fitting experts at reputable boutiques will not do this, and they will not try and push products on you that you don’t need. You’re doing yourself a disservice if you don’t know your true size. If it’s too bad to trust an expert again, you can try self-measuring.

3. You don’t think your breast size warrants it

Believe it or not, some women believe it’s not necessary to get fitted unless you have big breasts. It’s so not true! Any size still needs support, still needs the right style, and needs the right size to avoid constriction or discomfort. Even if you opt for a sports bra or bralette most of the time because you feel you don’t need the support, it’s good to know your size and give yourself the option for lift every once in a while. Wearing an ill-fitting bra with smaller breasts can still cause issues in the future for you.
4. You’ve had one a couple of years ago

How often should you be getting bra fittings? You may think once and then that’s it. Well, it’s estimated our breast size can change at least six times in our lives. So if you dismiss the need for a bra fitting because you’ve had one before, consider paying a little bit more attention to your body and how your bra fits you over time. Chances are, it’s not just wear that makes your bra fit differently – it could be a change in your breasts. There are several reasons why your breasts seem to change size throughout your lifetime – we even wrote a blog about it!

5. You don’t want to acknowledge your true size

Just as some women experience fear acknowledging their dress size, so too do women become afraid of their bra size. It’s just a number and a letter, but it can be difficult for a women to come to terms with it. She may want to be smaller or bigger, or may have had a negative experience regarding her size. We understand, we empathize, and we know it can take a bit of time to truly embrace yourself and your body. You will never find the right bra that will make you feel amazing until you are truly happy with your body and the size it is. We can’t control our breast size (unless we get surgery) so we might as well love what we’ve been blessed with!
