Long gone are those excruciatingly hot summer days, heat advisories, and crop tops. The leaves have started to fall, along with snow in some areas of The Great White North. This time of year brings unexpected conditions with each new day, and it appears that this season’s fashions have taken inspiration from that.

The last few seasons, we’ve seen a lot of recycling; not only were designers borrowing from past decades, but they were re-imagining trends we’ve been seeing for a while. The Fall/Winter 2015 runways are bringing back boldness and extravagance, with some elements of Old Hollywood glamour and 70’s fads. It’s time for us to pull out our wallets and buy something new!

Car Wash Skirts

There’s no reason why you can’t make a skirt work for fall and winter. Put on some tights underneath, or some high socks and boots, and voila! This season, the IT skirt is entirely new; the car wash skirt. Take the name literally; this skirt features cut pleats that resemble a car wash. It’s edgy, it’s avant-garde, and it’s a refreshing change from the mini skirts inspired by the 70s that dominated fashion recently. Contemporary and couture designers from Tommy Hilfiger to Christian Dior, brilliantly displayed how to wear this trend. The fashion elite, like Marie Claire’s Nina Garcia, show us how to make a car wash skirt work appropriate.

Puffy Coats

Also dubbed the “puffer coat,” these large and in-charge coats are so much more practical than the wool coats we usually deem chic. Let’s face it; Canadian winters are getting colder and it’s becoming more difficult to justify fashion over function when it comes to coats. However, designers like Fendi and Chanel take these typically basic coats to another realm, adding brilliant patterns and new shapes. ActressRachel Bilson paired hers with a feminine dress to keep both warm and in style.

Faux Fur

Fur is another common theme we see in winter, as it’s quite warm, but faux fur is becoming prominent even on the runways, where designers see that faux is no longer a faux pas. New designs are making the fake stuff look more luxurious with better quality fabrics. Versace did faux fur in a bold colour, while Dries Van Noten stuck with warm, fall colours that blend in with the leaves. Actress Emma Roberts showcased casual faux fur earlier this year, paired with a simple pair of jeans and a cozy knit.

Statement Earrings

Go big or go home! We’ve seen dainty ear cuffs and even one earring on the runway before, but now it’s all about being as extravagant as you want. Let those statement necklaces retire and make your accessory du jour a big earring. While the runways are usually about the clothing, you can’t help but notice how Miu Miu and Balenciaga added sparkle to their beautiful creations with jewelry. At the Met Gala, the always elegant Emily Blunt found a statement earring that complemented the beading of her gown, creating a showstopping look.

Neon

When you think of colour for fall and winter, you often think of warm neutrals and jewel tones. Not this time around! Use neon colours in your wardrobe this season to ignite a little bit of sunshine into what might be a dark day. Nobody does neon like Moschino, who incorporated ultra-bright shades into much of their current collection. Even a classic and elegant designer like Versace used neon accessories to modernize a black dress. Jennifer Lopez shows how neon can brighten up the skin, and goes bold by mixing shades.

Brown

Brown is a neutral colour that works for almost anyone; various shades can help brighten up your complexion. It’s also a colour that hasn’t been in style for a while; many think of it as drab or boring. It’s a perfect base for typical fall colours, although it is a bit trickier to match with other brighter colours. Socialite Olivia Palermo wore an inviting all-neutral look with a brown statement jacket while attending fashion shows this season, and she looked bronzed and glowy. Trussardi creates a striking brown look with a leather skirt suit, while Etro showcased several shades of brown in various looks and patterns.

Long Line Blazers

We haven’t seen much structure in terms of workwear over the last few seasons, and the long line blazer coming back in style brings it in a little bit. It’s a relaxed style of blazer, that sits longer on the body and is meant to be worn a little bit big. It can be a little bit androgynous, but isn’t like the boyfriend in that it’s not oversized. Jessica Alba, actress and street style maven, was caught in a casual look with menswear-inspired pieces, but with a punch of a bold purse. Mugler’s runway collection featured several styles, while Louis Vuitton kept it casual-chic.
