In this day and age, it is increasingly important for women to lift up other women, empowering them to be confident in their skin and in who they are. So when we hear stories about women who challenge negativity and harmful ideals, whatever it is, we should share the stories so they can touch the lives of others. On #ShopNTL, we love empowering women and sharing stories that inspire us to be better and be happy. Here are five stories of awesome women who used lingerie and social media to send a powerful message to others.
Vicky Balch
Vicky Balch had a long battle with her self-confidence when she lost her right leg in the horrifying Alton Towers rollercoaster crash. To try and lift her spirits, one of her friends bought her a boudoir photoshoot for her birthday. She went back and forth on whether or not she would go through with it, but thank goodness she did because the absolutely stunning photos have touched the lives of so many, including her own. Unfortunately, she did receive some negative comments – but to clap back at the haters, she just did another photoshoot! `
Elly Mayday
Elly was a young, ambitious woman working as a flight attendant and pin-up model when she recieved a diagnosis of advanced ovarian cancer. Throughout her incredulous battle, she continued modelling, inspiring many women experiencing the same fight to continue embracing themselves and their beauty throughout. She has appeared in several campaigns, including the recent Modelled by Role Models campaign, to raise awareness about inclusivity in the modelling industry and fighting cancer. She continues to spread her story all over the world through public appearances and has gained a very loyal and supportive following.
Lesley Miller
This story deals with swimwear, but we think it deserves to be on this list. Lesley has conquered body issues stemming back from when she was a child, as she struggled with her weight. At age 11, she had gastric band surgery, which is a rarity for children. It didn’t help her very much, and she struggled for years with hating her body and self-harming because of it. Finally, this year at age 21, she decided to shift her mentality and buy a bikini, showing off an image of her body on social media. Positive response ensued, and she has been celebrated for creating open dialogue about struggling with weight and embracing how weight loss can change the body.
Suraiya
This girl came under fire when she posted an underwear selfie, in which its purpose was just to simply share her love of Walmart underwear. However, she received a lot of negativity because she has body hair. She fought back against the very harsh comments and was proud of her body hair. What was an innocent photo turned into a powerful statement about women choosing to create their own beauty standards, even if they don’t align with what we’re commonly told is appropriate grooming.
Fran Hayden
Fran has a story similar to a lot of people; a life full of struggling with her weight and having a hard time dealing with ugly words from others. However, she attributes growing up to an evolution in mentality, as well as Instagram. She was inspired by the body positive movement and decided to become a part of it, sharing photos of herself in lingerie and cute outfits to a loyal following. She is inspiring others to move past their weight and embrace every part of themselves.
