Trend Alert – 70s Western Style

Looking for a way to spice up your fall wardrobe? A trend that is very en vogue right now is 70’s-vibe, Western-inspired clothing, which includes beaded shirts, fringed vests, and stone jewelry. A trend that started in music, interestingly enough (check out the Avett Brothers or Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros for examples), the Western-wear trend has spread from the hipsters of Brooklyn to the runways of Milan to your local department store. Though totally current and super fun, it’s easy to go overboard with this style and end up looking like Annie Oakley. So here are some key pieces that will help build your look without overdoing it.

1. Hats

Hats are a very easy way to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe without looking ridiculous. A black, brown, deep red or dark yellow floppy-brimmed hat will look great topping off a more tailored coat or dress. Just remember to get the hat in an earth tone, and you’ll be right on trend!

2. Vests

For those a little more daring, a vest with pretty jade beading or leather fringe brings the Western influence front and centre. It’s easy to dial down a vest by pairing it with a simple white shirt and jeans, and it makes a cool centrepiece of any outfit.

3. Shoes

A must-have for any woman is a pair of cowboy boots, and now there are plenty of options to choose from. Embroidered leather boots make a bold statement, and toned-down suede heeled boots are great for a day at the office. Another shoe style that’s coming back in a big way is moccasins, dressed up with either with fringe or beading. Moccasins paired with skinny jeans and a button down shirt creates a stylish outfit while not getting too over-the-top. The best part is they’re so comfortable!

Comfy Moccasins

4. Feathers

Feathers are a beautiful way to achieve the Western look, especially the cutting-edge trend of hair feathers. Hair feathers are huge with the younger set, but if hot pink and neon blue aren’t your cup of tea, the natural-hued feathers of brown, gold, and auburn are great for women in the working world. Hair feathers are clipped in either at home or at a salon, last for multiple months and are very popular with celebrities like Ke$ha, Selena Gomez, Rosanne Barr and even Steven Tyler! If you’re not ready to commit to hair feathers, there are plenty of earrings that feature gorgeous feathers without overwhelming an outfit.

5. Sweater Leggings

For someone who is really committed to this look, sweater leggings are the ultimate item to bring into the closet. Sweater leggings (as the name suggests) are pants or leggings with a bold, sweater-like pattern, often in earth tones. They are warm, comfortable, and extremely trendy. The way to pull off this look is to pair them with a solid shirtdress or sweater dress (you know you bought them last season!). A black or white dress always works, because it won’t compete with the leggings. Be sure to wear your sweater leggings with something that covers your bum though- they’re called leggings (and not pants) for a reason

    Rachel,
Another great article. I like the western look also. I wore a floral water colored print sundress, short sleeve, fitted at the bodice and slightly flared out from the waist, not too much volume and down to about 2 ” above the knee. I had black, square toed mid-calf cowboy boots with it. I felt good in the outfit even though I would be considered an older cowgirl!! I had some beaded jewelry around the neck, not real long. Too bad summer is ending but I guess I could find a jacket to wear with it for fall. Nice to hear from you. Lonnie

I always want to be daring and wear the “western style”. You gave me some inspiration to do so! I have a feeling the feather trend is going to die out fast- if it hasn’t already. Great Post!

I hear what you’re saying about the feather trend, Kat, but I hope it lasts a little while longer. I love it!

I think a dash of Western is timeless! I have been sporting cowboy boots for years, especially in the fall! I will have to become daring and try some feathers – homage to turkeys! Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Sara, Happy Thanksgiving to you too. I think cowboy boots are a wonderful choice – they ALWAYS make a bold statement!
