We live in a world where gender is a sensitive issue, as transgender individuals are becoming more recognized, especially with the help of celebrities like Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox. As society begins to become more accepting and informed, those who don’t fall into the cultural norms that have been engrained into us by society, have become more open about their authentic selves. Along with this shift comes a blurring of the lines of gender norms, and standards of what women or men are supposed to wear, act like, or think have changed dramatically. We all know this is true when it comes to fashion, as androgyny has influenced many a designer and stylist throughout the last few fashion seasons. So why stop at lingerie?
If an anatomical male has wanted to wear lingerie, his options would be very sparse and limited to what was available for women. Of course, when our bodies are built completely differently, it can be incredibly difficult for a man to find women’s lingerie that is comfortable or secure. Therefore, when a man has wanted to wear lingerie, he’s had to go into a store targeted for women. Not to mention the unnecessary shame and misunderstanding that could be attributed to having a desire for something that society tells you isn’t made for you. With this misery, exclusion, and lack of supply in mind, many businesses have begun developing lingerie for men – undergarments that resemble typical “female” lingerie built with an anatomical male’s body in mind.
Now, why would a man desire to wear lingerie? Consider how you may feel, as a woman, when you’re slipping on a newly purchased bra and panty set. The luxurious fabric hugs your skin and feels soft and silky, and the dainty touches of lace or satin bows make you feel beautiful and sexy. While it is difficult to say for certain why any individual enjoys wearing lingerie, we know how amazing it makes us feel as women so why not offer the same luxurious experience to a man?
Companies making lingerie for men consider all of the same important factors that other lingerie companies do. Proper fabrics, care and attention to the details that matter, and made with hygiene, breathability, and function in mind. Take, for example, Australian retailer Homme Mystere, a company that is making waves in the male lingerie industry. The product is gorgeous, stylish, coming in a variety of styles to suit many different tastes. They have made it possible for men to find proper fitting lingerie that is physically inspired by women’s lingerie, instead of having to try and maneuver around items that weren’t made for their bodies.
It’s a misconception that this type of product is geared towards or is only enjoyed by the LGBTQ community, and the company wants to make it clear that they intend to appeal to everyone, regardless of sexual orientation. According to The Independent, a survey conducted by Homme Mystere into their consumer base found that about 90% of consumers are heterosexual, or are in heterosexual relationships.
