Winter Weddings

The weather outside is frightful, but a winter wedding can be so delightful! The sparkling white snow can be a beautiful backdrop for a wedding, blending in with gorgeous whites and contrasting sparkles and florals. Bridal Week has come and gone, and bridal shows are sweeping convention centres to help inspire upcoming nuptials, and this past Bridal Week for the Fall/Winter 2015 season was full of unexpected and hyper-modern surprises. Not only can we find interesting colours, but lots of sparkle, lace touches, and new ways of cutting fabric for interesting shapes.

The eclectic array of designers who showcased their bridal creations not only had all of the bells and whistles, but collectively managed to design for every type of woman, even for the modern, high-fashion woman who’s looking for something coinciding with today’s emerging trends. Take, for instance, Kelly Faetanini’s peplum mermaid-style dress with an attached purple tulle underlay that adds dimension to an already out-there dress. Similarly, Rivini offers a sleek, white dress that fits close to the body with cut-outs at the waist for a daring and fit bride. Even the matching two-piece trend this Fall/Winter can be seen in a stunning blue dress by Theia, which also has pockets: something in high demand from modern brides!

Designers such as Alon Livne and Monique Lhuillier played with femininity and sexiness with low necklines, for women to either showcase jewelry or up the sexiness factor with tasteful decolletage. Despite showing a little bit of skin, the long sleeves and lush fabrics offer enough coverage to stay warm during the cold winter months. Zac Posen’s long sleeve gown, pictured above, also offers warmth with long, sheer lacy sleeves, which were popular on the bridal runways.

To reflect the sparkly snowflakes of a Canadian winter, brides can also bless their special day with glitter, diamond, and gem embroidery, as almost every designer incorporated some type of embroidery in their gowns. A touch of twinkle can transcend eras, with vintage numbers like the blue Claire Pettibone, or a princess gown by Dennis Basso. Naeem Khan’s long-sleeve deep-V gown seems to transcend all seasons, with little pieces of embroidery so minute, it blends beautifully with the modern silhouette.

A lot of brides want to add some color into their wedding dresses, while remaining in pure white. Austin Scarlett and Badgley Mischka offered dresses with flecks of color for brides who want to stand out. Nicole Miller’s classic slight-mermaid dress has a touch of feathers at the bottom; again, for a woman who wants to have just a touch of something unique without losing her traditional white.

Winter weddings are wonderful not only because of the glorious scenery for brilliant photos and video, but because it’s not the most popular season for weddings – although that may change quickly. What better way to spend your holidays than basking in the glory of a white wedding? Moreover, winter allows for many rich and luxurious colors to create a winter wonderland theme, from sparkling silvers to rich plums and cranberries.
